TX-SR805 Receiver Reviews

Low Cost for functionality.
Doesn't perform as specified.

I purchased a SR-805S from 6ave because it advertised 1080p output and HDMI switching, at a low price. The other reviews I read lead me to believe that it was capable of outputting 1920x1080 @ 60Hz which I thought would be perfect. Yes the unit outputs at 1920x1080 but it scales 1920x1080 HDMI PC inputs so ultimately they look terrible. I called Onkyo, called 6ave, and eleven days out of your 30 day return window and your stuck with it. BEWARE: If you want to connect a HDMI input from a PC and want 1920x1080 you will want to by-pass connecting through this receiver because IT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY DEGRADE YOUR VIDEO QUALITY. I commend those buyers that are able to catch all of the nuances of a device (with a 120 page manual) within their 30-day return window and ditch it. I unfortunately was not one of them.

Great sound. WOW
Heavy, but not an issue for me.

The Onkyo 805 is a great system. I upgraded from the 605 to the 805, I was lucky enough to have just purchased the 605 35 days before CircuitCity dropped their price from $1099 to $799. If you are on the fence and trying to figure out if it worth the extra money to get the 805 compared to the 605 then depending on the kind of speakers you have I would say "YES". My current system setup is Mirage V2 Left / Right and center channel. Mirage Nano Prestige surround and Mirage 8 inch subwoofer. I have a 7.1 setup. PS3 is used to play movies and music. The speaker wire is as cheep as it comes. (I am having some professional come in and run the high end speaker wires later if you are wondering why cheep speaker wire). I had the 605 for approx 30 days and watch at least 30 movies and listen to several hours of different kinds of music. Then took back the 605 and got the 805 hooked it back up to the same speaker setup and the sound is NIGHT and DAY difference. The best way to describe it is the sound is more powerful, it fills the room. The volume range is something like -50 db to 18 db. We keep it at -15 db for music and movies and the sound is amazing. If I take it up to 0 db on the volume no joke the whole room with start to vibrate and the cat will go running for cover. The room is 16 feet by 17 feet (Living room). When I paid the extra money for the receiver I was a little worried that it wasn't worth it, but after I plugged it in turned it on it was like "Oh YEA". I am not going to list of the settings, but I will say the setup was very easy (Please note that I did have trouble with the 605 because it was the very first time I ever setup a receiver), but if you ever set up a receiver this is easy and automatic speaker setup was simple. It will do up to six or 8 different listening positions. I only did three because the way our room is setup. Also good to note is this is about twice as heavy as the 605, but I was able to put it on my TV stand in the same place as the 605 with no problems so the size difference between the 605 and 805 are about the same. The 805 is a few inches deeper and about 1 inch taller.

Impressive quality product
None so far

Extremely complex. Not for the novice. Does require calibration and good knowledge of A/V connection setups. Definitely not a plug and play. It did have one hiccup; the remote control de-coupled itself and wouldn't be recognized by the receiver, I needed to run receiver setup and reset the channel for the remote. It worked fine after the setup, but I am now uneasy on what will cause this to do it again. Onkyo was very responsive and articulated a cure for the remote control problem; very impressive customer service response.

Future Proof; plenty of power & features
Gets really hot!

I was wanting to upgrade to a high-end future proof Audio/Video Receiver (AVR). I did a lot of research, and came to the conclusion that theTX-SR805 was the best bang for the buck. Onkyo provides a 2-year warranty, which is better than many other manufacturers. This receiver will decode all the latest and greatest high-def audio formats, and is HDMI 1.3 compatible. The remote control is learning, and comes with pre-programmed codes. This is nice, as the only thing I do with the TV is turn it on and off, since the HDMI integration within the AVR allows only a single cable to the TV, and the TV always is on the same input. The remote has a convenient dedicated TV on/off and input-select buttons. The remote is a bit bulky, however, and quite heavy! While it is backlit with button on the side, the text indicating the input selection is not on the button, but on the remote itself, which means that you can't really see what input you are selecting! Major oversight!Hookup was a breeze. It has 3-HDMI inputs (4 would have been nice!), has pre-outs, and multiple coax/toslink digital audio inputs. Note that if you want to use the multi-room feature, the amplifier for the second room only works off of analog inputs. So if you want to play audio in the second room, you need to bring in both analog and digital inputs from that audio source. Kind of lame. But even with these minor knocks, I am extremely happy with it. It sounds fantastic in our 7.1 system, equipped with Polk audio speakers.

Farouda DCDI, upconverting,power,looks
size,weight for my situation.

This is my second Onkyo receiver, replacing my TX-SR777, which still works fine.(I'm giving it to a friend) Set-up went well with auto speaker set-up mic supplied. Sound Quality is amazing, HDMI great, lots of power and a nice looking piece also. Remote OK, but I'll probably use my Harmony 880. Amazon had a great price and you get so much more for your money then with Denon.
